Have you gotten one of those scam texts about an unpaid toll and wondered what happens when someone enters their credit card information? Or, worse yet, fell victim to the scam and entered your card details?
The answer: oftentimes, the card details are relayed to runners who quickly drain the funds by purchasing gift cards. The gift cards are then used to purchase premium goods that are exported to and resold in China, from where many of the SMShing campaigns originate.
According to public records, there have only been three (3) U.S. arrests for this scheme since June 2024.
This week, HSI Baton Rouge launched the next evolution of #ProjectRedHook to go on the offensive against this scheme with the support of multiple HSI field offices and a select group of retailers and financial services companies.
The result: 12 arrests in just the past 72 hours.
🇨🇳All Chinese nationals.
We’re learning a lot about how this scheme works, who’s profiting, and how we can stop it. Stay connected with HSI Cornerstone and #ProjectRedHook for updates.
