As Amazon Prime Day rolls around, bargain hunters are out in force, but they’re not the only ones on the prowl cyber scammers are also looking to cash in on the frenzy. Vonny Gamot, Head of EMEA at online protection firm McAfee, has dished out advice on how Brits can sidestep the scammers during this week’s shopping spree, especially with AI technology upping the ante.
Gamot highlighted that those keen to snap up deals are prime targets for cyber crooks who disrupt the consumer rush for discounts. He cautioned: “Advances in AI help to create more convincing and sophisticated scams, it’s getting harder and harder for shoppers to tell the difference between a good deal and a fake one.”
However, he pointed out a common thread among most scams: “Many online scams, whether AI-generated or not, will play on emotions with a sense of urgency in their message, so it’s important to look out for this sign. And remember, when something appears too good to be true, it’s probably because it isn’t true! “.
Alongside dodgy deals, Vonny has issued a stark warning about fake confirmation emails and texts. These often come with an attachment or link, accompanied by a pressing message that urges the reader to click on it.
