Lebanon’s embattled Central Bank Governor, Riad Salameh, wente missing ahead of a hearing in France on fraud and money laundering charges.

“I have not found him anywhere, and accordingly, he has not been notified [of the hearing] in the proper manner,” Lebanese investigative judge Charbel Abou Samra told Al Akhbar on 15 May, highlighting that Salameh failed to respond to a summons sent by the judiciary.

Salameh failed to attend the hearing in Paris on 16 May.

According to reports in local media, Lebanese police visited the central bank four times last week to deliver the summons to Salameh on behalf of French authorities.

However, they were met by a security guard at the central bank who was tasked with providing various reasons for Salameh’s absence, including that he had just left the building, was in a meeting, or could not come to his workplace for “security reasons.”

Other reports claim Salameh “decided to skip the hearing … opting instead to retire in Sharjah, UAE” out of fear of being detained if he travels to France.
